What is a negative image?
A negative image swaps every colour for its opposite: black becomes white, blue becomes yellow and red becomes cyan, like a strip of film negative. A negative image converter does this to every pixel of a photo. Run it on a scanned film negative and you get the positive picture back.
How to make a negative image
- 1Drop a JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF or BMP photo on the box above, or click the box to choose it.
- 2The inverted image appears straight away.
- 3Choose PNG (keeps transparency) or JPG under Save as, then click Download.
What can you use a negative image for?
People invert images to turn scanned film negatives into positives, to make a high-contrast look for a design, or to make faint lines and text easier to read. Inverting the result a second time gives you the original colours back.
Questions
What does a negative image converter do?
It inverts every colour, like a film negative: black becomes white, blue becomes yellow, red becomes cyan. Transparent areas stay transparent.
Can I turn a scanned film negative back into a positive?
Yes, inverting a negative scan gives a positive. Black-and-white negatives come out cleanest. Colour film has an orange mask, so colour scans may look tinted and need a colour correction afterwards.
Which formats can I use?
JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF and BMP. Save the result as PNG (keeps transparency) or JPG. An animated GIF gives a still image of its first frame.
Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
No. Your browser inverts the pixels on your own device. The file is never sent to UpAgents or anywhere else, so it works on private files too.
