What does a BMP to PNG converter do?
A BMP to PNG converter rewrites a Windows bitmap (.bmp) as a PNG image. Both formats keep every pixel, but most BMP files store their pixels uncompressed, while PNG compresses them without losing any detail. The PNG is usually much smaller, and it opens everywhere: browsers, phones, chat apps and image editors.
How to convert BMP to PNG
- 1Drop your BMP file on the box above, or click the box to choose it.
- 2Keep PNG selected under Save as (pick JPG if you need a smaller photo file). The converted image appears straight away.
- 3Click Download PNG to save it.
BMP or PNG: which should you keep?
Keep the PNG for anything you share, upload or put on a website: it is smaller, it supports transparency, and every browser shows it. Keep the BMP only if an old program or device asks for that format. If the image is a photo and file size matters more than exact pixels, save it as JPG instead.
Questions
Does converting BMP to PNG lose quality?
Not for standard 24-bit BMPs: PNG is lossless, so every pixel is kept. In semi-transparent 32-bit BMPs, the colour of partly transparent pixels can shift slightly, because browsers store transparency premultiplied. The PNG is usually much smaller, because PNG compresses the pixels and most BMP files do not.
Is my BMP uploaded anywhere?
No. Your browser decodes the BMP and encodes the PNG on your own device. The file is never sent to UpAgents or anywhere else, so it works on private files too.
Can I get a JPG instead?
Yes. Pick JPG under Save as. JPG has no transparency, so any transparent areas turn white.
