What is an ICO file?
An ICO file is the Windows icon format that browsers use for favicon.ico. One .ico file holds the same icon at several sizes, such as 16, 32 and 48 pixels, so a browser tab, a bookmark and a Windows shortcut can each pick a sharp version. Converting from SVG draws each size fresh from the vector.
How to convert SVG to ICO
- 1Drop your SVG on the box above, or click the box to choose it.
- 2Tick the sizes you want inside the icon. 16, 32 and 48 px are ticked to start.
- 3Click Download ICO and save it as favicon.ico at the root of your site.
Do you still need a favicon.ico?
Modern browsers accept SVG and PNG favicons, but some browsers, apps and Windows still ask for /favicon.ico at the root of your site. A small .ico with 16, 32 and 48 px covers them. Keep the SVG favicon for browsers that support it, and add the .ico as the fallback.
Questions
Which sizes should a favicon.ico have?
16, 32 and 48 px cover browser tabs, bookmarks and Windows shortcuts. Add 256 px if the icon will also be a desktop or app icon.
Is the icon sharp at every size?
Each size is drawn fresh from the vector SVG, not scaled down from one bitmap. Very fine detail can still blur at 16 px, so simple shapes work best. SVGs that load external fonts or images render without them.
Which programs can open the ICO?
Each size is stored as a PNG inside the .ico. All current browsers and Windows Vista or later read this; Windows XP does not.
Is my SVG uploaded anywhere?
No. Your browser draws the SVG and builds the .ico on your own device. The file is never sent to UpAgents or anywhere else, so it works on private files too.
